Has every city got its own pace? What do we hear, see, and feel when we walk out the door into the cityscape? Is it too loud, too fast, too trendy, too narrow, too dirty, too crowded? How do we manage not to lose track?
This exhibition is a platform for artistic manifestations that are inspired by urban experiences. The works on display reflect and explore the urban condition of Berlin and Lisbon from a subjective point of view, illustrating individual encounters with the metropolis; they represent individuals’ senses of the cities and thus highlight the multiplicity of sentiments that arise in areas of dense cohabitation and interdependence.
This is a primer for us as a curatorial team. We start things off with an experiment at the intersection of interdisciplinary urbanism and art, inquiring about the role of exhibition projects and curatorial practice in cities: Are we contributing to processes of gentrification and displacement by using scarce urban space to show artworks? Do we manage to build connections that reach outside of the art world and are able to support networks of locals and neighbors? During this project, we look for answers to questions about the relation of art and the urban, its potential impact, and the sense of the city it creates for others to reflect upon.
